He done so, sawing off [[strikethrough]] a bit of a block from the stick [[/strikethrough]] on the steps leading from Aft cabin down to Main Cabin the short piece he wanted. Then drawing forth his knife he began his work. Many Innuits were standing about watching his (A's) operations. Of course Capt. B. & I watched closely every cut of knife. B. & I saw that this patern or model that A. was carving out, was bound to agree with one Ugarny had made - & we exchanged secretly gratified looks over A's head & shoulders. While A. was engaged in this work, down came one of the Innuits with a liberal slab of "Black-Skin" smoking hot, from the Try-pots (now which full blast night & day) offering a good share of it to my Carver.
