For Prize Contest

Five years ago we moved to this farm. All the country was a vast tract of timber that had just been reclaimed from a swamp. The soil was very fertile but before it could be used it had to be cleared. Many workmen were necessary to assist in the clearing. At that time wages were high in spite of the fact that we boarded most of the men. Our funds went rapidly. Sometimes our store bill was as much as one hundred sixty dollars. This was too much. We saw that if we could raise our own vegetables there would be a big saving. The next spring we planted a big garden with Burpee's seeds, for some relatives had recommended them. You should have seen that garden. The neighbors talked about it. When we began to use the garden stuff our bills went down, and kept going down until the were a very small percent of what they had been.

The next year our neighbors saw what a good garden meant and followed our examples.
