The only punishment for criminals now -a-days is to get locked up in jail which means nothing at all to a mongol for he is allowed to sit about the prison yard when it's good weather and that's all he does when he is at home anyhow. He gets his food without having to move an inch for it which is more than he gets at home. The worse thing he might be called upon to do is to sweep and clean the streets. There are very few criminals in Mongolia anyhow, the people are very law-abiding. The only thing you must not do in Mongolia is to put your nose in government affairs, if you do you are liable to be placed against the wall with some sharp-shooters behind you.

A great place is the race course in Urga. It is situated a little outside of the town. The course is not exactly level, it goes a bit up and down hill, but for mongolian conditions quite sufficient. There is no training of ponies, any pony may enter. The entries cost nothing-. The first prize is $20.-. the second $10.- and the third $5.-. A mongol who has been travelling all day long on his pony passes the race course, sees that there are races on and joins in. He thinks perhaps he might get a prize and that is so much to the good anyhow. The mongols are wonderful riders, their wooden saddles are much too narrow to sit down and only [[strikethrough]] serfe [[/strikethrough]] serve to hold the stirrups in position. The mongol stands up in the same all the time and has leg muscles made of steel. There is even a totalizator on the course and as in Mongolia everything is done the wrong way round, so also with the races. In most countries the Tote is there for the races, in Urga the races are there for the Tote. I have seen one instance, where the race had already started and a man came running from the tote and yelled out: "Stop the race there are still some people buying tickets". The ponies had to come back and wait until no more tickets were sold, then the race could start again. There are no limitations as to what classes of ponies or horses are allowed to run together and you therefore see big Russian cavalry horses and small mongolian ponies run the race side by side.

In summer it is not so bad in Urga, you can make very nice

The "m" in "mongol" and "mongolian" are mostly lowercase, but with the triple underline indication to capitalize them. I left them lower case.--thomasc
