under roof by this time at Broadway at 155th Street. It was not until early in the summer of 1919 that general conditions allowed again the resumption of anthropological work. Space not being available in the Museum building proper, the Department of Physical Anthropology was definitely placed in the building at 11 St. Nicholas Place, where it occupies the entire house.
The catalogued specimens comprise to date five hundred numbers, but come to about the double amount as whole skeletons and parts thereof are entered under one and the same number. Their geographical provenance is confined to America, with a preponderance of material from the Pacific Coast. Among the latter is enumerated the well-preserved "Thea Heye Collection" of eighty skulls from San Miguel Island, and as many long bones from the same locality.
The entire expense of fitting up these quarters, as well as the purchase of instruments, furniture, and fixtures, is due to the generosity of Dr. James B. Clemens. He also pays all salaries and operating expenses connected with this department, and the only expense borne by the Museum is that of heating the building. Undoubtedly this department will develop into a most valuable one in the Museum's work.
