show, perhaps better because we have so little chance to see performances of this type in Peking.

The greatest interest of the evening was that the great Chinese actor, Mei Lan Fang, was present to watch the Denishawn Dancers and at the conclusion of their program he appeared in a charming one act play based on a famous old Chinese legend of a General and his devoted mistress who for love of him and because his enemies demanded it, was willing
to take her own life that his might be spared. The acting was exquisite, the costumes dazzling and the gestures and singing which accompanied all Mei Lan Fang did delighting.

Miss Ferguson told us later that at the conclusion of the entire program the Chinese actor was photographed with Miss St.Denis and Mr Shawn, and then asked them to tea the following afternoon. At that tea Mei Lan Fang presented Miss St. Denis, whose work he greatly admires, with the costume
he wore in the play he gave the night we were there, and when she dressed in it he showed her how to walk in imitation of the Chinese woman's manner and style.

In the first place it would be hard to go back on them after this year of work; and now that this year of, at times, rather maddening organization, is over the road is clear for two years of intensive work and study. Yenching will from location be isolated from many of the Chinese I will have opportunity to meet and know through the Y.S.C.S and I feel sure that Yenching desires my organizing abilities rather more than my scholarly interests which to me are far more important in any development I may make which will be of use. So we decided not to accept
