Friday, 12 February
Mary Ferguson and Dorothy went house-hunting this morning, to try to find us an agreeable place to live in next year. They saw several houses, but got nothing very satisfactory. In the afternoon there was a Yenching "at Home". Dorothy received with Violet and they had the usual fatiguing time. Tom came over and spent the afternoon with me, and while we talked, ate and read, I got new folders made for my set of Chinese Famous Paintings, and they are now in good shape for use.

There were many fireworks tonight, and stores were all closing for the New Year. With the night the Cow year goes and Tiger year comes.

New Year's Day
We did not visit temples today, but instead I went over to Ferguson's where we had our usual class. Lucius, Arthur, Alan, Mary and I were the only ones present. We had a good session, and then a long session in which Lucius and Dr. Ferguson joined issue on several points of Chinese philosophy and Arthur and Alan and I all chipped in our bits. I finally broke up the party by leaving at noon to come home, change my clothes, and get our bedding packed for a week-end in the hills.

We took a car out to Wo Fo Ssu, the temple which is rented and operated as a hostel by the Y. There we had a warm room, beds with mattresses, and food and water. We loafed through the afternoon, Tom and I taking a little hike to a small temple of the War God and one of the towers said to have been built by Ch'ien-Lung to give his tropps practice in wall scaling. We got to bed quite early, and spent a full long night.

Sunday, 14 February
I was up fairly early this morning, and busy getting the fire pepped up and myself shaved. The hour just before the sun shows itself is the perfect hour for seeing the hills. There is clear full light, but no bothering highlights and shadows. It is of such mornings that Chinese paintings are the permanent records.

After a good breakfasts we walked over to Pi Yun Ssu ( Jade Cloud Temple) which was described briefly in the
