Later in the afternoon I gave my lecture on bibliography on missions and Christian work in China. With one more lecture I finish this course.

When I got home I waited quite a while for Dorothy, and when she finally came in I learned that Eleanor had had a telegram telling her to come at once to Tientsin as there was danger of communications being interrrupted, and that Louise and Mary Ferguson, and Isabel and Dorothy had all been tearing their hair to get ready for an immediate departure the numerous things that were not to be finished until time for her to take them in the morning. They finally got her off all right, and all was well.

The lecture this afternoon was by Chou Tso-jen on "Literature", interpreted by Lin Yu-t'ang. For those who could understand both tongues it was two speeches, for, while Dr. Lin followed Professor Chou, her brought in western parallels, etc., that made his speech a real interpretation and not merely a translation. The speaker s dealt with the literary renaissance now takingplace in China. If other things go well and we are able to publish this series of lectures as we plan it will be the first attempt of Chinese to systematically interpret their own culture and will be way and above anything that could possibly be done by foreigners.

Dorothy came up to have lunch with me, and after lunch we moved my office. The library is like this and I have had room 9 for my office because it seemed that room 8 was better for a work-room. However, working in room 8 meant carrying books back and forth through 9, depriving me all privacy, and making me an attendant in a waiting room when I should have been busy in the seclusion of my own study.
