Probably there are still other species in scrub. [[underline]] This group probably is combination of 2 groups seen earlier. [[/underline]] Synallaxis are noisy. Other species quiet. Synallaxis apparently in lead! 9:33. Almost down to road again. See single ^[[checkmark]] PL Atlapetes. Silent. 3 ft up scrub edge stream. Apparently alone. [[underline, with 2nd underline beneath non-]] The PL's here really are remarkably non-gregarious! [[/underline]] COMMENT: The fact that such a high [[underline]] proportion [[/underline]] of the birds here occur in mixed flocks is largely due to the [[underline]] absence [[/underline]] of other species! (I.E. species of drier and/or more open habitats, e.g. [[underline]] A. rufinucha [[/underline]], [[underline]] B. nigrocristatus [[/underline]], Firebelly, [[underline]] carbonaria [[/underline]] s.l. which are of variable gregariousness in other parts of the Andes.) In this respect, this area differs from the area below San Juan in Central Ecuador (where the variable species [[underline]] were [[/underline]] present and partly gregarious). ^[[left margin-underlined and in red]] Carbonaria [[/left in red]] 9:54. Down by road, see single ^[[checkmark]] Whitestart in tangle edge ravine. Silent. Definitely alone 10:02 See a pair of CXIV ^[[two checkmarks]] feeding in second growth tree 6 - 20 ft. up. Silent. Definitely alone. [[underline]] I am sure that these are the birds I saw with the large mixed flock on May 21 and which I confused with CC's! [[/underline]] 10:32. A little further up road.
