CELEBRITY

[[image - black & white photograph, face shot of smiling, graying, mustachioed man.]]

Louis Zorich (who costars as Charley in "Death of a Salesman") chooses SPINDLETOP 254 W. 47th St., between B'way & 8th Avenue.

For two bustling decades, the friendly Spindletop has been well identified as a popular theatre area perennial, serving hearty prime ribs and beef, steaks, the freshest seafood and Continental specialties.

Now under the direction of the vastly experienced, food-wise Hal Kanter, who's both savvy owner and charming host, Spindletop (christened after a Texas oil field) retains a consistency of cuisine and service. Its broad appeal extends to New York regulars as well as out-of-town visitors; celebs such as Dorothy Loudon and Jack Lemmon feel so much at home, they make it a show business hangout.

The somewhat clubby, commodious interior is comfortably informal, accented by a hopping bar and several inviting dining rooms, each with its own unique personality ideally suited to private parties.

Across the board dining possibilities include lunch, cocktails, pre-theatre dinner and after theatre supper. In addition, there's piano entertainment nightly.

The long-time chefs present such robust, prepared to order fare as Fresh Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, and Spindletop's Baked Stuffed Clams. Entrees worth pursuing are Prime Sirloin Steak, Hefty Cut Prime Ribs of Beef, Filet Mignon, and Ham Steak Hawaiian. For seafood fanciers, there's Shrimp Scampi, and Large South African Lobster Tail. A variety of Veal and Poultry dishes rounds out the menu.

And don't let the dessert trolley go by without hailing it. Delectable: Chocolate Grand Marnier, tasty Pies, Cheese Cake.

CHOICE

[[Image - black & white photograph of young woman with short haircut smiling]]

Anita Gillette (who stars as Blanche in "Brighton Beach Memoirs") chooses NICOLA'S, 146 E. 84th Street, bet. Lexington & 3rd Avenue.

Nicola's has become and remains the exciting place for delectable, reliably prepared Italian/Continental food, served in an easy atmosphere. The patronage, numbering Norman Mailer & Norris Church, Judy Collins and Alan Jay Lerner, visibly attests to its draw as an ideal pre- or after-theatre favorite.

Interestingly, all this East Side activity has come about in just ten years, thanks to the expertise of partners Peter Bertoli (also the amiable host) and super chefs Claude Lorang and Alfredo.

The crowd's electricity starts at the bar, presided over by the knowing Noel Young, and then on to the warm, wood-paneled and beam-ceilinged dining room.

The attentive staff performs with brio, and the menu prices (open for dinner only) are nicely palatable. In these relaxed surroundings, it's a delight to order from such good looking and tasty appetizers as Stuffed Avocado With Shrimps; Mussels & White Wine; sublime Escargots; and always a variety of feathery Pasta dishes like Fettuccine Alfredo, and Tortellini Panna (With Cream); plus a dynamite daily pasta special.

Cordially recommended entrees: Broiled Bay Scallops; Lobster Pescatore; Shrimp Marinara; Veal Scaloppine With Fresh Mushrooms; classically prepared Saltimbocca; Paillardes of Veal or Beef; Chicken Limone; Pepper Steak; and succulent Veal Chop, a house pleasure.

Next temptation: Nicola's ravishing dessert – Chocolate Mousse, Cream Cheese Cake, and a nifty Zabaglione.
