FASHION FORECAST continued

control, it is not a bad idea to inspect the resort styles to get an idea of what they will be wearing in the season ahead. A linen shirt - and there are many of these - can also provide a bright note to a wool tweed suit.

Keynote of many resort collections is the blazer often in white linen. This is equally effective paired with long skirts that can be either slim or flared or with trousers. Under the jacket and sometimes substituting for it is a variety of sweaters, usually loosely fitted to the body.

Cotton is a favorite for knitted cardigans that have some bulk but are light
weight, offering just enough protectionfrom errant breezes or vigorous air con
ditioning. Under the cardigans come tank top or cap sleeve styles with decorative stitching or small patterns.

There are ask amusing styes that are worth investigating, such as the jumpsuit
which fits loosely around the waist and which avoids the problem of shirt pulling out of pants or skirt, the playsuit with a tie-on overskirt to give it greater formality for work or lunch, and short midriff-baring sweaters for the woman who doesn't have to worry about a roll around her middle.

While hem lies are predominantly long, no designer insists that they have to
graze the ankles. There is no ironclad rule about hem lengths. Women are free to shorten their clothes to the length they like best. Even tall women will have no problem getting their clothes long enough.

There is, in fact, a breezy, laissez-faire spirit about the clothes which contributes to their charm. That is the secret of the best American clothes: They are not too demanding of the wearer, and they don't take themselves too seriously. Because the various parts are interchangeable, they
allow women to express themselves in an original way. No two women need put
the parts together identically. They pick the pieces that suit their figures and their lives and everybody profits. That's the new order of fashion.
