September 4, 1952.

Mr. P. H. Benford,
106 Broadway,
Whitehall, New York.

Dear Sir:

We have your interesting letter of August 28th regarding Indian materials you have recovered from sites on Lake Bomoseen, Vermont.

Some years ago we excavated an extensive burial site on the shore of Lake Champlain in the town of Shoreham, Addison County, Vermont. As far as the writer knows, the material found there has not been duplicated in any recoveries from the New York side of the lake and it is quite possible that Ritchie's statement as to no ^[[early]] burial sites having been discovered in the eastern part of New York state, it does not apply to the western areas in Vermont.

Dr. Ritchie, as you know, is now State Archaeologist with headquarters in Albany. It would seem to the writer that he would be glad to exemine your collection when he is in the neighborhood of Whitehall and it is suggested that you write him about it. He should be addressed at the Education Building, Albany 1, New York. Dr. Ritchie knows the material from our Addison County site, above-mentioned, and it is quite possible that your Lake Bomoseen specimens will fall into the early chronology, where, we believe, the east creek material belongs.

Very truly yours,
