Caravan of camels, horses and carts bearing members of Porgy and Bess cast treks over Egypt's desert on sightseeing tour of famous Pyramids and Sphinx. During Cairo engagement, thespians spent gay holiday from heavy stage chores cavorting in sand and sun. Egypt, third as large as U.S.A., is 95 per cent desert, population, 22 million.

Sitting high, wide and handsome on a hump, Gloria Davy (one of three Besses) enjoys camelback ride. Slow motion trip costs 20 piasters, about 57¢ in USA money.

PORGY AMID PYRAMIDS

Goodwill opera troupers spend gay holiday touring Egyptian desert

PLAYING HOOKY from Catfish Row and their dual role as actors and ambassadors of American goodwill, members of the touring Porgy and Bess cast took a day off during their recent in run Egypt to visit the Pyramids.

As their rich laughter rang out over the silent desert, Pharaohs turned over in their sarcophaguses and Arab guides laughed for the first time in their dedicated lives. Even the Sphinx relaxed his grim visage as Rhoda Boggs, lodged on camel's hump, screamed in terror.

It was their day off, but the 65 government-sponsored thespians continued to spread happiness and counteract Russian "cultural propaganda." At a party staged by an editor of a paper unfriendly to the USA, the atmosphere remained cool until one trouper, after outbouncing the Oriental bellydancer, swung into a jitterbug to the off-beat music that was real Arabian. "At that point," reported CBS correspondent Frank Kearns, who was present, "a lot of anti-Americans deserted ranks."

During their stay in the Near East, the cast captivated the people both off the stage and on. Said a Cairo reviewer, "If this is propaganda, let's have more of it."
