Subject from the story of "Pyramus and Thisbe". Thisbe stabbing herself to death before the body of Pyramus who has just killed himself, believing that his beloved has been devoured by a lion, which had only carried her veil away. The fig_tree under which this tragical scene took place thereafter only bore red fruits. Italian 16th century. Signed Urbino 1534. Delivered at 135 East 65th street October 31st 1922 For Mr. W.W.
