Mr. Jacques Seligmann,
705 Fifth Avenue,
New York, N.Y.

Dear Mr. Seligmann:

A letter from your son to Mr. Sachs written on February 20 has been called to my attention. The painting of Justus de Gand which you refer to is a picture that interests the Fogg Museum very much. Our funds are limited but we have some rich and influential benefactors.

I write to ask whether instead of taking the picture to Europe you would consider lending it to the Fogg Museum, in the hopes that while it is here I could interest someone sufficiently to buy it.

As you know, we are doing the best we can to get a collection of great masterpieces on a limited amount of money and we depend on the generosity of our friends. If you feel like making such a low price on this picture that it may be within reach of some of our benefactors, you would not only yourself be doing a service to the cause of art education in America, but would help to put someone else in a position to do likewise.

If this matter interests you I hope you will let me know, and if you like I can come to New York to see you.

Yours sincerely,
