3. WHAT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN CARING FOR THE COLLECTIONS UNDER YOUR CUSTODY, i.e., IN THEIR PRESERVATION AND INSTALLATION?

The storage space of the department having become entirely too small for the collections, the lower rooms of the West Balcony were fitted up partly with shelves and in these rooms it is proposed to file unit boxes, swinging screens and mounted pictures ready for exhibition in the Museum or for exposition purposes. These will be installed in the south storage room of the West Balcony.

The office formerly occupied by Dr. Flint has now been fitted up for Dr. Adler and the section library connected with the section of religion and the section of oriental antiquities. Adjoining this room, the north storage room or the West Balcony, it is proposed to place the reserve and study series connected with the peoples of Asia and Northern Africa. The material has been gathered in this space and the framework and drawers have not yet been completed. This will clear the second story of the West Balcony so that, the photographs and pictures may be stored in the room adjoining the south office. The room adjoining the north office may be reserved for a poisoning room and the entire balcony be devoted to the custody of American material and specimens belonging to such general topics as are worldwide in their application.

The third story of the North tower is devoted to Eskimo material, and a room above that, the fourth story of the North Tower, has just been fitted up for the custody of such objects as are too long and unwieldy to have on a balcony where drawers are to be used.
