1. HOW HAS THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 1896, COMPARED WITH THE PREVIOUS YEAR, AS FAR AS (1) THE NUMBER OF ACCESSIONS AND (2) THEIR SCIENTIFIC VALUE ARE CONCERNED?

The fiscal year ending June 30, 1896 does not compare favorably with the previous year excepting, in the great value of the Fewkes collection from Arizona. The reason for this is that in the previous year material was acquired for the Atlanta Exposition while during the fiscal year 1895 – '96 the Curator was engaged in taking care of the material acquired for this Exposition.

The number of accessions is 100; the majority of them have been small, those worthy of especial mention are a small collection from the Gulf of Aden, received, in exchange, from the Glen Island Museum the accession number is 30,021.

A useful series from the Vale of Kashmir, sent as a gift, from Dr. W. L. Abbott; accession number 29,967. A collection from New Guinea made by Mr. A. C. Haddon; accession number 30,002. A collection from the Fort Rupert Indians of Alaska made by Dr. Franz Boas for the purpose of illustrating, in a group, the Cannibal Ceremony of that tribe. A small collection from the United States Fish Commision from Alaska; accession number 30,232. A large series illustrating the manners of the Kiowa Indians. A small and precious collection of paints and dyes from the Navajo Indians made by Dr. Washington Matthews, U. S. A., Two hundred and six specimens from the Lubny Museum, Skarjinski, in exchange. An interesting series from Enrico Giglioli in exchange; accession number 30,742.
