5. WHAT SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS HAVE YOU COMMENCED, CONTINUED, OR COMPLETED, UPON THE MATERIAL UNDER YOUR CARE, DURING THE YEAR.

The Curator has finished up his work on "Primitive Transportation" and has given a great deal of time to the preparation of a comprehensive work on the practical arts of the American Indians, North and South. The object of this is to establish a series of types characterizing the various arts in the various areas or culture regions so far as this can be done, not only with the material in the National Museum but by collecting responsible material that is valuable in other places, a great many hundreds of descriptions have already been written. A systematic plan has been laid out and a large number of illustrations are prepared for this final and comprehensive work.
