8. GIVE THE NAMES OF ANY PERSONS WHO HAVE PROSECUTED INVESTIGATIONS IN YOUR DEPARTMENT DURING THE YEAR, AND STATE THE SPECIAL AIM OF THEIR STUDIES.

During the past year in the Department of Ethnology Mr.  J. D. Mc.Guire of Ellicott City, Md., has prepared for publication a paper on the " Primitive Boring Apparatus " and he has commenced a paper on the " Pipes of the American Aborigines."

Dr. W. J. Hoffman has prepared, for publication, an illustrated paper on the " Graphic Arts of the Eskimo."

Dr. J. Hampden Porter has been engaged upon a paper on the " Foods of Primitive People " and other things as a factor in civilization.

Dr. Walter Hough has devoted a great deal of time to the study of the Eskimo lamp and Dr. Walter Fewkes has been engaged, between November and June, upon an illustrated catalogue of the magnificent material which he was able to collect in Arizona during the previous summer.
