Gentlemen:
I wish to acknowledge receipt of your favor of November 20th and in reply beg to state that Mr. Stein is at present in Europe.
I would say, however, that the reason your bill for $60.35 has not been paid was because Mr. Stein was not satisfied with the expense attached to the shipping of this picture, as outlined to you in a previous letter.
On July 6th you forwarded to Mr. Stein a detailed invoice of your Paris House, dated June 18th, explaining some of the items. Mr. Stein remarked on receipt of same that he considered the packing charges in a double case, amounting 120 francs, positively excessive, considering the small size of the picture. He also took exception to the freight charges of $29.75
You no doubt had this small case shipped on one B/L [[bill of lading]] with ^[[word written in margin Pro]] other merchandise to you, and in that event the minimum freight rate for a single case surely would not apply. We ourselves are getting shipments from France nearly every week and while we know that the price of cases is high and the freight rates way above normal, still we have a fairly good idea of what the charges ought to be and should think that you bill would be open to discussion and readjustment.
While Mr. Stein, as stated before, is in Europe, the writer feels that he would be satisfied with any reasonable adjustment we could mutually agree upon.
Kindly let me hear from you in this matter, and oblige,
Yours very truly,
HH-HDW [[signed]] Hugo Herzog
Secretary to Leonard L. Stein
