This is Dr. Pat's book. It is far from complete, for already his achievements, like those of all men who are larger than life-size, would fill many volumes.  These pages, then, contain only a few of the highlights in the first twelve years of the United Negro College fund.  They were compiled by UNCF staffers who tried to capture within these covers something of the excitement and sense of high purpose which marked the advent of America's first educational chest.  As old files were explored and the incredible success story which is the Fund began to unfold in telling detail, it became increasingly the story of a man with a gift - the gift to fire others with his own great spirit of unselfish dedication.  Many of the hearts and minds he kindled belonged to the greats and near-greats of our time, but the bright light of their recognition and approval never dimmed his deep appreciation for the least of the Fund's friends. If he had no other claim to greatness - and his

are legion - this quality alone has won for him the ardent respect and love of all of us who have come to know him in our work. That is why we hope this book will be VOLUME I in a long, long, series.
