Dr. Frederick D. Patterson
Tuskegee Normal & Industrial Institute
Tuskegee, Alabama

Dear Fred:

I can very well appreciate the delight and satisfaction which the Directors of the Phelps Stokes Fund must have in receiving your acceptance to become the Director. I saw Ed Merrill the other day and he could hardly keep a smile off his face because of his extreme happiness over your acceptance. I wish to send my most sincere best wishes to you as you assume this new post of opportunity and challenge. My sympathies are with Tuskegee. Your leadership, wisdom, and statesmanship as the President of Tuskegee have been of such high quality that your loss to this institution will inevitably be a severe blow. I am sure that you should feel the greatest possible sense of satisfaction because of your creative accomplishments there. May God continue with you.

Very sincerely yours,
