[[underlined]] Recommendations and General Remarks. [[/underlined]]

The great desideratum in this Department is space for the exhibition of archaeological specimens. The removal of ethnological articles is progressing very slowly, while additions in the shape of prehistoric objects come in with unproportionate rapidity.

I would again urge the removal of General Capron's Japanese collection. It is entirely out of place in this Department, and its being there elicits the unfavorable comments of intelligent visitors. My operations in the exhibition hall have been delayed by the non-execution of carpenter's work, chiefly shelving, for which I had made requisition.

This necessary work, I hope, will soon be performed.
