A REFLECTION

Of earth, and sky, and flowers I sing, O Muse!
Of man's great gift of freedom, how to choose
The place wherein his habitat must be,
Far inland, on mountain or by sea.
Come and bring to him the light of day,
Wherein he may find the great high way
That leads him not to wealth nor famous things
That bind his soul and steal his heart away.
Grant him the vision, wherein he may seek
Things high in realm and worthy of his feat;
That all earth's sons together may share such fruits
Which nature has denied not e'en the brutes.
Great freedom's lore be planted in his breast,
That mankind far and wide may seek this quest.

Pray, what strange force thus causes man to be,
O poet, must I bore you with my plea!
Tell me! tell me! what causes all the strife?
Sing, O Muse, and say that it is life.
Let learned me explain and give me rest,
Let echoing voices ring forth with full zest;
America's worthy scholars, be leaders in the fight,
Life's long hid secrets bring forth into light.
Set not the earth aflame with fires of war
Which make the riv'rs drink blood near and afar;
Will you fail, and will you say
The task is too severe in our day?
Be swift, earth's worthy sons, we wait to know
What golden mysteries lie within the vale below.

VADE ATQUE VALE

Hail to thee, mother of this restless brood
Of those who Knowledge in thy folds have sought.
A patient parent, thou hast understood,
And loving kindly, thou hast kindly taught.

From foster children nutured tenderly,
From every clime and watered shore remote,
Our anthem song directed comes to thee,
Glory and Love resounding in each note.

Approaching now, our weakling selves to wean,
To pangs of parting we become resigned;
None ever thought what sorrow it would mean
To leave a breast so noble and so kind.

Our spirits here enobled for the fight,
Thy soul in us forevermore to dwell,
Depart we saddened, from thy guiding light -
O Foster Mother, Hail to thee - Farewell!
