Club History

The Thespian Study Club was organized in 1933 when Dr. Garnet C. Wilkinson, First Assistant Superintendent of Schools, invited a small group of people interested in drama to meet to discuss the possibilities of such a study. It has moved forward steadily under the direction of Lillian Tanner, its president.

Activities of the club in the past eleven years have furnished a test of whether a community theatre project would succeed in Washington. Beginning with a series of lectures on the drama in the season 1933-34, the club the next season moved into the production field with "The Red Robe."

Under its auspices in the season of 1935-36, The Little Playhouse Group of Philadelphia presented "March Hares" in the Armstrong High School Auditorium. "Ladies in Waiting" under the direction of Louise Lovett, followed in the season 1936-37. The entire cast of this play was selected from the club's membership.
