The National Negro Opera Co, Inc. and the Washington Guilds HEADQUARTERS: 1037 EVARTS ST., N. E. WASHINGTON, D. C. DECATUR 5232 [[line]] Our Aim TO OFFER opportunity to the Negro Musician in the field of Grand Opera; TO DEVELOP higher professional standards in all fields of higher art; TO ESTABLISH the proper appreciation and cultural background that Opera offers; TO INSPIRE composers of both races, particularly the Negro composers, to create more interest in composition in the Operatic field using the background of Negro Folk Tunes. It is the hope and dream of all races to attain the highest level in musical expression and culture. The National Negro Opera movement seeks, through organized efforts, to further the realization of the dreams of our racial group. It is our hope to see and aid the promotion of movements which will lead ultimately to more serious creative efforts in the field of orchestral and operatic music. Believing such movements must stem largely from basic educational efforts and programs, we hope to see our many universities and music schools initiate projects which will lead to the establishment of operatic groups and Negro orchestras of symphonic proportions in many music centers. Then National Negro Opera Company, Inc., hopes to organize guilds which will welcome any one desiring a more active participation in the work of the association. This opera company is founded to bring lovers of grand opera into close comradeship, to broaden the appreciation of the opera and allied arts, and to assure the performance of opera by the Negro artist in every city. If you read our daily papers or listen to your radio, you know that all of the major opera companies solicit annual contributions from music lovers for their maintenance. Likewise the National Negro Opera Company, Inc., is asking for its friends to help bring the public such performances as this which has caused great music critics to give a worthy appraisal and acknowledgment to its effort. After having been thrilled by this stirring Festival, we feel that you can and will contribute to this worthy united effort for cultural freedom. In return, your will reap the reward of strengthened morale and spiritual uplift. In times like these, it is more important than ever for the spirit of good music to be kept alive.
