No. 4. From Benning's Bridge. Shows much use.

No. 5. Chloras Bay, Choptank River, on the eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay. From a fishing camp. Found in 1883.

No. 6. Unique example from same place. Quartzite; double-faced with two grooves for the probable purpose of extra hafting to secure special accuracy of impact. Both faces exhibit long continued use. An exceedingly interesting subtype.

No. 7. Found in a mortuary mound near Saltpetre Cove, in Botetourt Co., Va., Valley of the North Shenandoah. Mound 21 x 14 x 8 ft. Remains cremated, I believe. An earthen dish, spears, knives, arrows, pipes and a spherical mass of stone six inches in diameter were found with the axe, eight feet below the surface. The entire mound was removed while building a section of railroad at that point. The contractor gave me these objects in 1880, the year after their discovery."

Acc. 21546. Cat. No. 140064-70.

Entered Jan. 11/89.
