"Enclose sketch of a rude stone hatchet found on surface at Freemansburgh (about 2 1/2 miles from here) x x x With it were found two others, smaller, whole and about two dozen fragments of others---mainly the sharp ends. None are polished, and from measurement of some of the fragments, I think they belonged to hatchets or axes of quite good size (from 1 1/2 to 2 times as broad as sketch.) From their position I cannot think them other than of Indian and quite recent origin. x x x All objects found here are rude, and out of 2000 arrow and spear-heads there are few that show traces of care or artistic taste, and cannot be compared with those found in other states. The few that are graceful are of a different material from the ordinary finds."

Asks if we had heard that the Mashpus of Martha's Vineyard are using stone arrow-points at a late date. He saw a number in 1872 near Gayhead.
