Presdt, Director or some or other office it appeared, is all.  He is a gentleman, and proved so entertaining I could not get away until it was time to Take train for Wells.  So, I did not find time ^[[yesterday]] to call upon Mr. Girdlestone as intended ^[[and]] as Mr. Harvey urged me to do.
The hospitality of Bristol people "passeth all understanding" so, instead of calling upon Mr. G. while passing through his city again today, I am instead, seeking security and pleasure in writing a few belated letters.

Your letter of July 6th reached me the morning I left London and I have read with interest
