Japan is undergoing tremendous changes and in the fierce race for wealth and power its traditions and aesthetic ideals are being trampled in a mire hideous beyond description. I struggled for ten days to prevent myself from running away from conditions which I felt I could not face.  But my better senses, I am glad to say prevailed, and, I hope, no further doubts will harass me.  The work I want to do must not be defeated even if at the cost of much personal disappointment and no little constraint of ideals.

Yourself and family are quite well I hope.  A recent letter from Watson tells me of Anna's improvement and this is good news indeed.
