Most of the time, yesterday, X just held its hand in front of its face during HL, but sometimes it also licked or bit quietly at the surface of the palm, or, more frequently, the hair of the forearm just below the raised hand. These licking and/or biting movements were apparently identical with ordinary grooming movements. They look as if they were "displacement" in this situation, but they are of course probably purely autochthonous reactions to seeing the hand & forearm right in front of the face. "Postural facilitation." We put X in the large outside cage today, with A and the three Squirrel Monkeys. Quite a lot of interactions between all the animals, which I had a little difficulty following. The general sequence seemed to be as follows. When X was first put in, it was obviously quite alarmed & upset still. The usual nervous exploratory behavior. Accompanied by more MGB's and STrll's. In the cases of both A and X, again this morning, the MGB's were always much commoner than the STrll's. After about 1/2 hour, the 2 [[female symbol]] Squirrel Monkeys were gradually overpowered by their curiosity and gradually started to approach X. X resented this very strongly. Repelled them by making "grimacing" BT's, and, usually, leaping toward them, with obvious [[?]] of
