Dear Mr. Wilson;
         Yours of the 4th with specimens received.
         The material is halloysite, a hydrous aluminum silicate allied to kaolin. The sample is very similar to the so-called "Indianite" of Cox, found in St. Lawrence County, Indiana, where it occurs as a residue from the decomposition of the limestone. From what you write I judge this originates in the same way. Get a few pounds of it for us, as clean as nature allows.

          Trusting you are having a picnic, I am, ^[[exclamation point]]

                    Very Truly Yours,

                    Curator Dept. of Geology.
