During this period the exhibition series of mammals occupied [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] certain cases upon the floor of the main hall of the Smithsonian building, and the the galleries on the north [[strikethrough]] side [[/strikethrough]] south sides of the same hall.  The mounted skins were labeled throughout in the most careful and [[strikethrough]] precis [[/strikethrough]] elaborate manner.  The osteological series was also labeled, but not so thoroughly.  The alcoholic collection and the duplicate skins were stored in [[strikethrough]] various [[/strikethrough]] such different parts of the building as the crowded conditions of the storage-rooms would permit.

In 1876 the department was represented with others at the Centennial Exhibition.  One hundred and fifty-eight species and varieties were included in the series, some of which were represented by mounted skins, others by skeletons, skulls or photographs.  Some important species were represented [[strikethrough]] by a [[/strikethrough]] in all these forms.
