[[handwritten]]
The only person who has prosecuted investigations in the Department during the year (beside the Curator) was Dr. E. A. Mearns, U. S. A. He has been engaged in the study of the large collection made by himself and Mr. Holzner on the Mexican Boundary, and comparison with Museum material, with [[strikethrough]]It shoul[[/strikethrough]] the purpose of publishing an extensive report on the geographical distribution and relationships of the various forms [[strikethrough]]found[[/strikethrough]] inhabiting our southern border.

It should be mentioned that the officers of the Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammalogy of the Dep't of Agriculture have had free access to the collections and have availed themselves of the opportunities, though they have not really studied to any extent [[underline]]in the Department[[/underline]]. As a matter of fact, there are neither room nor facilities for students in the present quarters of the Department, which are fully occupied by the office force.
