report.

It should be said that much is done [[strikethrough]]by[[/strikethrough]] for the department by persons who are friends though scarcely correspondents in the ordinary sense. Much is done by conversation and indirect effort. Many of the scientific staff and among the other employees of the Museum have interested themselves to get specimens of mammals themselves or through their friends. I find the names of 18 officers and employees on the list for the year.

The collection of Mr. J. D. Figgins, previously mentioned, was secured through Messrs. Matthews and Richmond. Some Central American squirrels [[strikethrough]]sent[[/strikethrough]] were presented by Mrs. McElroy, a friend of Dr. Porter.

The names of J. H. Camp, Wmr. Astor Chanler, Lt. Will Robinson, Prof. Wm. Trelease, Prof. D. T. A. Cockerell, Dr. E. Loennberg and Dr. P. L. Sclater, who are correspondents of the Museum rather than of the Department, should be mentioned in this connection. Their donations have for the most part been small, as far as this year is concerned, but they have shown a friendly interest.
