8.  GIVE THE NAMES OF ANY PERSONS WHO HAVE PROSECUTED INVESTIGATIONS IN YOUR DEPARTMENT DURING THE YEAR, AND STATE THE SPECIAL AIM OF THEIR STUDIES.

Dr. E. A. Mearns, U. S. A. has continued his study of the Mexican Boundary mammals collected by himself and Mr F. X. Holzner, with the view of publishing an elaborate paper on the same under the Museum.  Dr. Mearns by report has been "accorded the same privileges as a curator" by the Ass't Secretary, and has used the collections at his discretion & had the use of the library of the department, services of messenger, cataloguer, &c. &c.

Two advance papers by him have been published in the [[underline]]Proceedings[[/underline]] during the year:

No. 1075. Preliminary Diagnoses of New Mammals from the Mexican Border of the United States

No. 1081. Preliminary Description of a New Subgenus and Six New Species and Subspecies of Hares, from the Mexican Border of the United States.
