The night was clear & frosty. On our way down the canyon in the morning we saw many oaks & yews, large [[?]] ferns & much moss & streamlets on the sides. The monkeys however were not in evidence. They are said to wander about much & only come near the village when the maize is ripe. The road soon left the stream & cut high above the creek following a water ditch. We reached a pass near the north 2000 feet above the Mekong which could be seen far below flowing calmly. Fields plaster the mtn sides in the Mekong to a height of 3,000 feet above the river but no houses are near them, the people all living in small village on the banks of the river. We made camp on the Mekong near the village of Chung-lu at 6,000 F alt. For tiffin we had a duck & a goose roasted & stuffed with chestnuts. A few days ago we had one of the blue cranes roasted & stuffed & the meat was very fine flavored & juicy excelling duck or goose in flavor.
