[[circled]] 14 [[/circled]]  Our departure from Hsiao Kuan occurred at 8:30 in clear cool weather with a [[strikethrough]] good [[/strikethrough]] fresh breeze in our teeth coming up the canyon.  At the entrance to the canyon a mile below the city is a picturesque little fort with a heavy wall & portholes surrounding it.  The canyon at this place is only 100 feet wide with high grassy hills rising steeply on either side [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] 2000 feet above.  The river here filtered down thru boulders in a series of rapids [[strikethrough]] like a [[/strikethrough]] & becomes a roaring torrent for several miles.  Farther down the canyon we passed thru a village were a hot springs issues from the hillside & where the road crosses the stream run over a millwheel.  Bath houses of stone are erected here for the Hsiao Kuan populace.   The road runs high above the stream on the south slope of the canyon.  Far below the foaming torrent is visible & in wide places rice fields & an occasional village.  At noon
