I visited the market at 10 A.M. & found it in full blossom, heaving like a bee-hive.  Several different tribes were the chief components & hardly a Chinese was in evidence.  No women with bound feet were to be seen altho there are a few resident here in the winter.  When summer approaches all the Chinese leave for the highlands to the north to avoid the malaria which is often fatal to them.  Some of the tribes were easily recognizable by their dress which was quite distinct from the universal blue of the Chinese.  The women of the tribes wore skirts in a silk & bare feet in marked contrast to the trousered Chinese women.  The men often exhibited tatooing on their thighs & in some cases as a girdle about their waists.  The tatooing was very elaborate &
