few were known to me. I saw figs of several species & higher up malples & tree ferns but palms were scarce. The large bamboo was an abundant growth lower down. As we approached Darjeeling the gardens became more numerous & natives of a different type from Bengali made their appearance. They were robust & wore filthy clothing, [[symbol: female]] rings in their noses & great brass disks for earrings. These were Nepalese & Butans, at Darjeeling. Besides these there were many Tibetans, especially men: the rickshaw men here are Tibetans. Darjeeling lies on a steep side hill, the streets following the contours of the hill & connected with step like side streets. Fog & rain prevailed during the afternoon of our first day.
