150. 1935 [[image - coloured in square indicating period]] January opened mild & very wet, but dry weather with E. wind came in about 15th, though still mild & only frost on one night. 14th Jan. Snowdrops in back garden out 19th Jan. Two yellow crocuses out in front garden, W. side of house. 20th. M.D.S. & George reported Celandine out between the "Narrow Walls" & Rathfarnham. 11th February Almond tree in Kenilworth Square out. 18th Feb. Purple crocus near gate in front garden out. 23rd Feb. ^ [[insertion]] Catkins on [[/insertion]] [[underlined]] Salix cinerea [[/underlined]] [[female symbol]] in back garden "apparently" out. 24th Feb. First [[underlined]] Chionodoxa [[underlined]] flower out. 27th. a. [[underlined]] Anemone appenina [[/underlined]] out, after bad showing for several weeks. 3rd March. First flower of [[underlined]] Sax. oppositifolia [[/underlined]] (Snowdon plant) out in front garden; all other plans with coloured buds. 4th March. Branker reports many willows out in Wicklow but none seen by him or me around Dublin. [[horizontal line]] Weather took a turn for the better on 4th March, but after two lovely mild sunny days turned very cold with E. wind which increased to nearly a gale with snow showers at week-end (9th & 10th), improving again on 11th, which like 12th & 13th was an all-sunny day with frosty night. [[underlined]] Sax. apiculata [[/underlined]] flowers began to open in front garden but not really open till 11th, when the red Saxifrage also in flower & all plants of [[underlined]] Sax. oppositifolia [[/underlined]] in full-bloom, except that from Muckanaght, which only opened flowers on 12th. M.D.S. reported Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly in garden on 12th & I saw one on 13th. [[line across page]] 13th March 1935. A perfect spring day, all sunny, after a frosty night, but of course E. wind very keen. Rode to Bohernabreena, ^ [[insertion]] & Glenasmole, [[/insertion]] Co. Du., arriving at 2.30 p.m. left bike below lower dam & went straight to the coombes east of lower reservoir. Here found only a few flowers on several willows, but plenty of Andrenas out & saw one Bumble, the first I had heard of this year. Also both Peacock & Tortoiseshell Butterflies. [[underlined]] Bombus lucorum [[/underlined]] 1 [[female symbol]], searching, in 3rd coombe. [[underlined]] Andrena [[strikethrough]] praecox [[/strikethrough]] apicata [[/underlined]] [[2 male symbols]] plentiful along fence-parts &, 1 [[female symbol]] almost certainly seen in 2nd coombe; [[2 male symbols]] also at scarp in 3rd coombe. [[underlined]] A. clarkella [[/underlined]] [[2 male symbols]] & [[2 female symbols]], very fresh & only playing, at scarp in 3rd coombe [[underlined]] Aphidius [[underlined]] 1 [[male symbol]], swept amongst grass on lower dam.
