239./ NORTHERN TRIP: WHIT 1938. 31st May 1938. Went by 9.15 ex. Amien St. to Belfast. Spent aft. at Queen's Univ. & on to Donaghadee by 5.12 train. Drizzle all day. 1st June 1938. Cole & windy with heavy rain & gale at night. Wind E most of the day turning N.W. & rising in evening. Insects very abundant in shelter in spite of low temperature. "Coondara", Donaghadee, Co. Down. Had three spells of sweeping in "the jungle" & field W. of same. [45 from 1, 23 from 2 & 27 from 3 kept & these labelled 25/12/39 et seq. AWS.] 1 = N.W. corner of shelter belt 11.0 - 11.30 AM. 2 = Sheltered edge of field W. of last. 12.30 - 1.0. 3. Under trees at S.W. corner of shelter belt, just as rain came on. 7 till 8 P.M. Aphelopus & Antaeon 1 [[male symbol at 3, 2 [[male symbol, male symbol]] at 1; & [[male symbol, male symbol]] abundant at 2, amongst grass under tree. - 5 kept, besides that named by OW.R. Bombus lucorum mostly [[juvenile symbol, juvenile symbol]], some [[female symbol, female symbol]] seen. B. lapidarius 1 [[female symbol]] sent. B. agrorum [[female symbol, female symbol]] frequently seen. 240./ 1.6.38 cont. "Coondara", D'dee, Co. DO. cont. Vespa norvegica nest, 6" diam., in Rhododendron bush in garden, with antennae reduced to 1/2 inch opening facing away from wall.
