1.12.1940, cont. Glanmore WI., cont.

In the oak-wood above the castle & at the entrance to the Devil's Glen, on steep slope facing about NE. fresh growth covered much of the Vaccinium myrtillius, which was otherwise leafless, & the new growths were in full flower, giving the wood, with its leafless trees the appearance of early April: this autumnal growth can only have been due to the rain of early October following the prolonged drought during the summer months when the S.E. & S. of Ireland as a whole was burnt up for want of rain. At the same time the N.W. (from Sligo northwards) had by no means a dry period, as rain came in July & continued in sufficient quantity except for two very hot, dry,
weeks in Sept.
