277. 5th Aug 1942. A fine but dull day with variable wind, NW., then E & finally S on the Murrough, but W. when we got back to Dublin. Went by 9 AM. train to Newcastle, Co. WI., & took bikes, so as to ride to Greystone & came home by 4.20 train from latter place. Swept 3 areas south of Newcastle station, but insects decidedly scarce. The Murrough, S. of Newcastle, Co. WI. 1 = between railway & sea 1/2 mile S. of station 2 = Marsh, reed-bed, &c. on S. side of lane across marsh, 1/2 mile or so S. of station. 3 = Marsh & fields &c. N. of lane at 2 & inside (i.e. W.) of the marshes. Taken at 1, or seen there! [Only 12 from 1 mtd. & these labelled 7.11.44] Hemipteron Therapha hyoscyami: several of this pretty species seen, of which I was the first captor in Ireland. One normally coloured & one pale salmon-pink & black mounted. Colletes picistigma ♂︎ swept Bombus muscorum ♂︎♂︎ & ☿☿ abundant on Scabiosa arvensis & the former extraordinarily fresh. B. hortorum 1♂︎ on Scabious. Psithyrus campestris: dark ♂︎ & pale ♂︎ on Scabious. P. barbutellus & distinctus probably seen. Vespa rufa 1☿ seen. Pompilus rufipes 1♂︎, others seen, for a few minutes about 11 AM. when sun nearly out. Tachysphex pectinipes, for a few minutes about 11 AM. when sun nearly out. Cryptus viduatorius ♀︎, ant. 35. Microcryptus ♂︎, clouded wings, ant. 23 = Hemiteles 1 small, dull, black ♂︎, ant. 21 = Bracon anthracinus? ♀︎. Chelonus inanitus: as usual abundant: 2 black ♂︎♂︎ & 1 spotted ♀︎ examined. C. corvulus? ♀︎, smaller sp., ant. 25. Sigalphus (caudatus?) 1♂︎. Apanteles falcatus 2♀︎♀︎. A. sp.? 1♀︎; small black, Sect. 1 of Marshall.
