16th Aug. 1942.  

A fine day, with sharply rising glass & strong SW-W wind after a rather damp depression or series of depressions during previous week.  Cooler than previous day, which was very hot & damp, with heavy rain in forenoon in Dublin.
Rode to Royal Canal (Louisa Bridge) at Leixlip station Co. KD. & after lunch 1/2 mile west of same along canal to the usual plantation, but latter place very windy & insects hard to find.  Collected by sweeping in four areas as follows: -     
1 = Slope from road to Rye Water N. of canal
2 = Field on right bank of Rye Water north of 1.
3 = Bank of canal, tow-path, &c., just E. of plantation 1/2 mile W. of Louisa Bridge
4 = Inside walled plantation

Bombus lapidarius  ♂︎♂︎ & ♀︎♀︎
B. lucorum  a few ♂︎♂︎
B. muscorum  ☿☿ & ♂︎ ♂︎ one of former stung me on the ear & followed me & attacked me several times, even after being captured in net & released.  A painful sting but pain only lasted about 5-10 minutes.

Bombus agrorum  ☿☿ & ♂︎♂︎.
B. distinguendus  1♂︎ at 1.
Psithyrus rupestris  ♂︎♂︎ common.
P. campestris  ♂︎♂︎ of both pale & dark var. common.
P. distinctus  1♂︎ certainly seen.
Andrena minutula  2nd brood  1♀︎ at 3.

Tenthredella moniliata  ♂︎♂︎ & ♀︎♀︎ with very red abdomen frequent on Wild Carrot, Angelica &c. at 3, by canal.
Tenthredo arcuata group  ♂︎♂︎ & ♀︎♀︎ common:  not examined.
Athalia:  several seen.
Small black sp. at 4 = Selandria cinereipes  ♂︎.
Pteronidea myosotidis  ♂︎♂︎ at 2, in top, NE., corner of field.

Collected many beetles & 1♂︎ Stenomacrus out of large "bracket"-like fungus on dead poplar tree at 4, as on previous occasion.
