319. 3rd Sept. 1942. A fine day, nearly all sunny, but with rising glass & very strong W. wind after a wet night due to passing depression. Went by 10.25 bus to Portmarnock, with Desmond P. Walls & Fergus O'Roarke: the former having found a colony of the ant Myrmica schencki - 5☿☿ mounted! - on the edge of the dunes near the Sutton end of the peninsula just outside the high ridge which bounds the golf-links & in line with a mark on the beach & the centre of Ireland's Eye. Here the nest is well underground & at or nearly at the foot of the slope bounding the older & newer formed dunes. M. scabrinodis (a small neat form!} & M. ruginodis-[[strikethrough]] laevinodis (?) [[/strikethrough]] - 3☿☿ mounted & I think they are only ruginodis! AWS. 1944, - as well as Lasius niger also nearby. Swept before lunch in dunes N. of golf links & then along shore to the point (= 1).
