19th May 1943.

After a fine morning, with the glass down again, wind rose about 10 A.M. & turned SE-E forming a jam along the coast, which did not clear till about 2 P.M. Warmer & softer than previous 3 days & almost rain about noon, but dry & cooler in the afternoon. Went to Dollymount by a bus just after 10 A.M. & walked along The Black Banks to Sutton, where picked up the 11 A.M. Portmarnock bus. Then walked down the Portmarnock peninsula about to the tip. Swept a little on way across the peninsula, but few insects out at this time.

Then swept for an hour between golf links & sea. Again after lunch swept for another hour & then came back to peninsula N. of golf links & after tea swept Salix repens, &c. for half an hour. This plant seemed to have suffered much from cold winds earlier in spring & to have flowered very early, as ♀︎♀︎ flowers over & fruit ripe, but some ♂︎ catkins again out since recent rains (& snow!) & many sawflies on these plants of Salix. Did not visit exact spot where Desmond Walls found Myrmica schencki in 1942 & all red ants examined M. scabrinodis & M. ruginodis.
