9. 26th Sept. 1943 (Sunday). A cold morning with strong NE wind, cloud & bursts of sun. Set some insects & went out at 12.30 to woods behind Castlereagh Lodge ruins & here discovered a series of ponds. Failed to take any hymenoptera by sweeping & so tried sucker on one patch of brambles, &c. under a small oak in hedge on S. side of pond found a wonderful assemblage of small hymenoptera & in half an hour here - only moving a couple of yards back & forwards - I collected some 120 & these labelled "B'c't'y. (1) 26.9.43". Afternoon clear, cold & sunny with one hail shower & walked up past new house in woods (where Mr. & Mrs. Sheppard are living!) towards the Tipperary road & then back along upper, disused, track through woods to west of ruined B'c't'y house & down across fields to stables & so home by main avenue. Collected here & there during walk, but chiefly at an oak & an alder about 200 yards NE (above) the new house (= "B'c't'y" (2) 26.9.43") & later swept for 15 minutes in plantation between stables & field NW of same, along small stream channel where much Polygonum hydropiper grows, i.e. in same place a station 3 on 14.9.43 (= B'e't'y. (3)26.9.43"). 10. 26.9.43 cont. Ballinacourty, ST. Taken at 1. Collected with sucker off brambles, &c., under oak on S. side of pond in woods near ruins of Castlereagh Ho. & close to main entrance gate, just E. of hotel. 12.45 till 1.15 PM.
