10th May 1944.  

A very nice day, with much sun, falling glass, but very strong W. breeze.

At lunch time in hot sun saw the first Crabro in garden, either a small ♂︎ leucostomus or a large ♂︎ varius.
Also saw first worker Bombus - jonallus - at flowers of Mediterranean Heath.


14th May 1944. 

A fine sunny day, with strong cold N.E. wind, after a dull & very cold day!  Did not go out till after lunch, but collected a few things in garden in forenoon.

Crabro varius & C. leucostomus; plenty of former, a few of latter.
Vespa germanica & V. vulgaris  ♀︎♀︎ seen 
[No Bumbles seen!]
Sawflies.  Athalia liberta? Yellow pleura & venter! ♂︎ & Pontania ♂︎
"Pimpla" oculatoria  ♂︎, ant. 28.  
Homocidus tarsatarius  a fine ♀︎, ant. 22.

14.5.1944, cont.  Afternoon.  Grand Canal, W. of Clondalkin, Co. DU.

Collected by sweeping at three places:-
1 = reed bed by side of canal just above 3rd lock above Clondalkin.
2 = between canal & parallel drain, 1/2 mile further up, just above dairy farm gate.
3 = in hay-field parallel to canal & S. of it at same place as station 2.

Phygadeuon?  ♀︎, ant. 18, short terebra 
Atractodes (♀︎?), ant. 19.
Zortrephus suspiciosus?  1♂︎, ant. 20, mounted on its back!
Stenomacrus curvicaudatus  ♀︎, ant. 26.
Campoplegids  1♂︎ Meloboris & 1♀︎ of other genus. not mtd.
Opius caesus  ♂︎, not mtd.
Aspilota (Synaldis) parvicornis  ♀︎, very small, ant. 15.
A. (Synaldis) parvicornis female, still more minute, ant. 13, cf. specimen in Haliday coll. & his record of concolor with only 13-seg. antennae.
