30th Sept. 1948.

A Most glorious day after a misty early morning. Took day off as laying car up for winter & not paying tax for next quarter, & drove to Devil's Glen, WI., where arrived about noon and walked up to head of glen & had lunch in open at 12.40. After lunch swept till 4 P.M. in 3 areas as follows:-

1 = Upper part of glen & mainly above & just below the zigzag road
2 = Area around gate by ruined lodge (where the wood stops!) & chiefly in swampy places by tributary streams from north.
3 = side of avenue from 2 to foot of glen where car left.

Butterflies seen during day:- Very many Speckled Woods, a very few Peacocks; one Red Admiral at lunch place flying towards the hills, i.e. SW-W.; one fresh Small Copper near same place.

Bumble Bees seen:- Bombus agrorum very many ☿☿ at heather & Scabiosa succisa; B. lucorum 1♀︎, 1♂︎ & a few ☿☿, the latter at Erica cinerea near lunch place; B. jonellus 1☿ or ♂︎?, at Erica cinerea with last.

Wasps. Vespa vulgaris ☿☿ frequent.

[[marginalia]] Car refused to come home! Connexion to Mag. worn out & had to leave car at Kilpedder & come home by bus! Car subsequently towed home by FitzGerald! [[/marginalia]]
