4th January 1949. Entirely dull, cold & wet till the afternoon.

5th January 1949. A dry day, cold in morning & dull, with E. wind; mild in afternoon with SW wind & with considerable sun. Therefore again walked round to the National Walls in afternoon to look for wasps, but on way there saw quite a number on roadside wall between the old Water Gate of Rathfarnham Castle by River Dodder & Landscape. Here during sunny spell watched them for some minutes in several places & thought one had the long antennae of a male, but failed to catch this between the fingers - perhaps just as well. This date is within 5 days of late R.M. Barrington record, 10th January, for Fassaroe, Bray, Co. Wicklow.

6th January 49. A lovely mild morning with much warm sun, but turning to misty rain with strong SW-W. wind in afternoon. Did not get out to look for wasps till 4 P.M. when colder & with light drizzle & so saw none.

Our earliest Snowdrop under drawing room window now definitely "out".

7th Jan. 1949. Cold but fine in morning, with falling glass. Afternoon began with drizzle, but heavy rain with gale from SW-W at 2.30 when a black cloud (a line squall) passed over, followed by heavy & continuous rain or drizzle till evening. Took 47 bus at 2.15 to Ballyboden & arrived just in time for squall. Stayed in shelter till worst over & then walked back to Rathfarnham & so home. No wasps seen!

8th Jan. 1949. A lovely clear, cold, day; all sunny till late afternoon. Wind light - NW.

After attending Edgar Palmer's funeral (son of John A.J. Palmer!) rode, alone, on bike to Churchtown & home via the Narro Walls & Rathfarnham, but too early in day & no wasps seen on ivy between R. Dodder & Landscape where seen on 5th. In afternoon took 54 bus to Crumlin Cross & walked via Greenhills & Tymon Castle to Fir House & so home by bus. No wasps!

9th Jan 1949. Mainly dull, cold & windy (W). In afternoon walked to Templeogue & Willington House & back to 54 bus by Whitehall Rd.

10th Jan. 1949. Entirely dull, with cold W wind. In afternoon walked via Rathmines & Dartry up Dodder to Orwell Bridge & so home. No wasps! Falling glass all day! One yellow Crocus seen in Kenilworth Square N. garden!
